Have you caught the Outlander bug yet? The mystical TV series that is captivating the nation…… If not, read on and find out why the series is so special to us in the Scottish Highlands!
Outlander is a British - American TV series based on the spell-binding Outlander series of time travel novels written by Diana Gabaldon, it focuses on a 20th century nurse Claire Randall, who time travels to 18th century Scotland and finds adventure and romance with the dashing Jamie Fraser.
From the books being published back in 1991, the show premiered on August 9, 2014 and has become extremely popular. If you have fallen in love with this saga and you wish to discover Claire and Jamie’s world, come and experience the country that inspired the writer and the TV producers, come and visit us in Scotland and more so the Highlands.
Main character Claire Randall, who is played by Caitriona Balfe said: "We travelled the length and breadth of Scotland and were filming in the most beautiful places so I can't imagine people won't come away with an idea of how beautiful Scotland is."
We are very lucky here at Highland campervans not only because the TV adaptation was filmed on location in Scotland but also because so many of these sites that inspired the producers are very close to our base and easily explored with a campervan!
Let us highlight some of real locations featured in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels.
The Clava Cairns, near Inverness, which is believed to be the inspiration for the Outlander’s fictional standing stone circle Craigh na Dun. The stones in the TV series were made of Styrofoam and installed on location and if you wish to find out more about Clava Cairns, please click HERE. They are within a 15-20 minute drive from the Highland Campervan base.
Many such standing stone circle structures exist all over the British Isles, including Scotland and if you are planning to visit any of them you will find their list HERE.
The other very famous site that is extremely worth a visit is Culloden Battlefield which along side the Clava Cairns is also ideally situated only 15 minutes away from our base at Highland campervans. You will learn here more about the Battle of Culloden with a visit to the fantastic Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre. As you tour the site, stop for a moment and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the last battle ever fought on British soil and it’s also here where the shows main characters Claire and Jamie says their sorrowful goodbyes.
We can’t forget mention city of Inverness where Claire’s adventure starts while she is on her second honeymoon with Frank.
Just about 40 minutes driving away from us you will reach well known Loch Ness. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the legendary Loch Ness Monster, referred to as the water horse in the book.
Are you a romantic soul? If so then a must do is a journey along Caledonian Canal and Great Glen Way towards Fort William. You will admire beautiful landscapes and great wildlife along the way. Views of the mountains are just stunning and you can enjoy it on foot or on horseback, as the newly-wed Claire and Jamie did after their wedding.
If you need some more inspiration a visit to the VisitScotland website is a good idea, they have put together a very inspiring itinerary and also have an Outlander filming location map where you can follow in the footsteps of Outlander characters. Click HERE to see their website and download the map.
Another great source of information and also a fantastic set of Outlander self -drive tour E-books is the website http://onthetrailofoutlander.co.uk/ . You will find a range of made to measure Outlander tours from and to Inverness where we are based and also some tours further afield to Glasgow and Edinburgh where you can tour with a campervan or motorhome to take in all the locations and experience the sights and sounds of the Outlander experience for yourself!
