Campervan Hiring FAQs

Check our availability calendar to see if the motorhome you would like to hire is available. If there is a provisional booking over the dates please contact us anyway in case the booking changes.

To make a booking you can complete our online booking form to reserve the hire dates. We will confirm your booking via email and send a full estimate of your hire cost with a request for the booking deposit due.

If you contact us via phone or email, we can also print and post a booking form to you.  We will send a confirmation with full estimate of your hire cost and a request for the booking deposit which will be payable via credit/debit card or bank transfer.

We require 50% of the vehicle hire cost to confirm your booking. The final balance is due 4 weeks before your hire and will cover the remaining vehicle hire costs, plus any additional extras requested.

For booking enquiries you can email us at bookings@highlandcampervans.com or phone us on +44 (0)1667 493976 to check availability and prices. If you email, please also provide a contact telephone number.

Unless you make an online booking, please contact us first before booking flights/trains to Inverness.  We are quite happy to pencil customers into the diary for a few days, allowing holiday plans to be finalised with a campervan safely reserved.

The preferred and safest payment option is internet bank transfer, payment details can be found on your confirmation email along with the reference number to use.

We accept payments via debit and credit card free of charge with no limit if Mastercard or Visa. Sorry but we do not accept AMEX.

There are some amazing campsites around the Scottish Highlands that offer everything from a 5* luxury experience to a small wild croft site with no facilities. We would encourage everyone to use these sites if possible to support the local economy and you know you have the landowners permission to park. If for any reason you can’t stay on a site, then there are safe places to pull in off the road for an overnight stop, but just remember there are basic common courtesy rules to follow. Importantly, you must respect other people's privacy and property when you're looking for somewhere to park.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code (SOAC) doesn't include motor vehicles. It's extremely important that you Leave No Trace and observe the countryside code. We provide a handy guide on the dos and don’ts of informal camping in our hire vans and more detailed information can be found on the useful www.campa.org.uk website.

The leisure battery will charge when you drive, so if you are driving each day and using only the lights and 12v sockets at night you will have plenty of power to see you through the night. If you're spending a few days in one spot and won't have chance to charge the battery whilst driving, then you may prefer to use an electric hook-up facility at a caravan/camping site. If you want to use the 240V sockets for hairdryers or a microwave etc, you will need to be plugged into an electric hook-up for them to work.

All our motorhomes are new, modern vehicles, you get used to the size of them very quickly once on the road and the cab area is extremely similar to driving your own car. You need to be aware of your height and width, especially when manoeuvring or parking and your passenger will become your best guide! Our panel van motorhomes will easily tackle all the small highland roads including single track and the famous Bealach na Ba. Due to you having an elevated and comfortable seating position in the cab area you will be happy on your road trip in no time at all.

Before driving away in your lovely home from home you will have a full and comprehensive handover demonstration. This will last from 45 minutes to an hour and you can ask unlimited questions so you are happy and feel comfortable with all the features in the van before setting off.

Yes. Whether you passed your test before January 1997 or after, you can drive vehicles up to 3500Kg. All our motorhomes are under this weight.

The minimum age for a hire is 21 years old and the maximum age is 79. Customers younger than 21 or older than 79 can be considered by our insurers and possibly able to hire subject to an increased excess. Please get in touch to discuss.

This is a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question as there are many variables, but generally our customers are able to travel for around 400 miles before needing to fully refuel. We recommend topping up when you get to the half full point on the gauge and there are plenty of fuel stations around so you will never run dry. Average fuel consumption (again can vary due to many variables) 25-30 mpg and your vehicle will be full when you collect it and you need to return it to us full.

No! We do have vehicles that you can hire for a long weekend or midweek, and out of season we can do shorter hires. Please contact us to discuss dates and we will do our best to accommodate your request. If you want to hire for a period longer than a week this is also possible, we will be as accommodating as we can, please get in touch with us at bookings@highlandcampervans.com or call us on 01667 493976

Our diary is set so that we turn our vans over in the same day, customers return the van in the morning and we clean and prepare the van for the afternoon collection. This means we run a very tight schedule to make sure your van will be ready for your hire. Sometimes circumstances allow for an earlier collection, please contact us to discuss this and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

The latest collection we have is 3pm, please contact us should you wish to arrive later than 3pm to discuss if this is possible. Late arrivals / collections maybe subject to a surcharge. Do not book connecting travel such as planes or train tickets unless you have it agreed that we are able to accommodate an earlier or later collection.

All of our collections and returns are completed at our base in Inverness.

If you are arriving via plane, train or bus we do have a collection and return service available to help transfer you to our base for the handover. Alternatively there is a main bus route that passes our door and many local taxi firms are also available. If you are unsure of your best options, please contact us and we can help!

The vans are fully equipped in the kitchen and bathroom areas, and you can hire bedding, towels and camping equipment from us, so all you need to bring is YOU! Oh and your clothing and personal effects. We will even stock the fridge and cupboards with your online shopping if you wish! If you travel to us by car you are free to bring your own bedding, camping chairs etc.

You will encounter varying road types in the Highlands including single track roads. When driving on single track roads you have to take into account your own experience and confidence, as you may be required to reverse back to a passing place. The famous Bealach na Ba has played host to our vans plenty of times, but as it combines steep sections with hairpin bends and a drop to one side in parts, you do have to think about whether you are comfortable driving on these types of roads. To avoid the Bealach na Ba you can take the very scenic coastal road in and out of Applecross instead.

The Drumbeg Loop is another road we urge caution on. It's a narrow single track road which may require you to reverse into a passing place (or ideally just wait and let oncoming vehicles pass). Please be a considerate driver and let vehicles overtake you at the first safe place if you are travelling slowly and enjoying the scenery!

When you're driving around the Highlands on your holiday you'll probably want to cruise along at a leisurely pace enjoying the fantastic scenery around you. The roads in the Highlands have few opportunities for safe overtaking so the Highland driving etiquette is to pull over on the left if you see traffic coming up behind you and let them overtake. It means locals can continue their daily business in a reasonable time or reach the Mountain Rescue/Fire service callout they may be attending and you can drive along at your own pace without a car right on your tail.

The other main road hazard is wildlife. Suicidal pheasants are a common hazard on country lanes but shouldn't do that much damage to the vans. Stags and deer on the other hand will cause a nasty bump, so please be extra careful on the remote mountain roads. Take your time and be a courteous driver.

Four weeks prior to your hire we will contact you to provide us with up to date ID to satisfy our insurers requirements. You will need to provide the following ID :-

  • Driving Licence photo card or full old style original paper licence
  • DVLA code (we provide you with instructions on how to obtain this)

You also need to provide TWO forms of address ID, we can only take ID from the following list:-

  • Utility Bill - Gas, Electric, Water or Telephone/Broadband (mobile phone bill is not generally accepted)
  • Council Tax Bill (this needs to be the current year's bill)
  • Bank Statement
  • Credit Card Statement

Please be advised that we cannot take anything other than what is on the list above, if you are unable to provide this type of ID with a matching address to your driving licence, please do not book as we will not be able to insure you as a driver.

The vans are actually very warm as they have a heating system on board that run on either gas or electric. For extreme winter nights, or if you get cold very easily, the heater pumps out hot air very quickly so our motorhomes are suitable for use all year round.

We love welcoming furry companions! All we ask is that you follow some simple guidelines written in our pet policy and pay the Pet Fee which helps with additional cleaning incurred. Have a look at our Pet Friendly advice page for more information.

You can access a copy of our full Terms and Conditions by clicking on the Terms & Conditions link which is in the footer of this website.

If a motorhome is taken off the UK mainland and onto the Scottish Islands, the recovery and breakdown cover will only provide support for the road transfer sections. Any costs of transporting the motorhome on the return ferry (plus potentially a recovery truck) will be the liability of the customer, even if it is a breakdown or accident and outside of the hirers control. Costs can vary from £300 to £1000+ for recovering vehicles from the Islands (plus the motorhome is un-hireable if the ferry is full for several days).  This reducer will bring the liability for these transfer costs to £0.
